Course Description

What if objects could talk? How can we use drawing to visually investigate objects? And what kind of stories and connections might this reveal?

This class will take a creative approach to thinking about objects, allowing new meanings to emerge through drawing. We’ll draw objects of our own - these could be anything, whether found, inherited, human-made or organic. We’ll also take a look at extraordinary artworks and artefacts from across the ages, and look at natural and made objects to explore diverse dialogues. Creatively using aspects such as mark-making, line-quality, composition and scale we’ll investigate our objects’ material qualities, and reveal histories traced across their surfaces. Experimentation with different media and arrangements will explore what interests you about your chosen objects - reflecting your own insight and personal vision as well as generate new creative directions. By exploring expanded meanings of ‘still life’, this class will also give you more creative freedom and confidence when drawing from observation.
